Whatever Happened to Space Combat Simulators??
I used to buy about a game a month although that’s really slowed down recently. The most recent game I bought was LA Noire and before that I hadn’t bought a new game for about 3 or 4 months. Lately I haven’t been finding very much originality in new games coming out for the most part. They are the same old thing. Everything coming out is a remake or a reboot or a sequel. My PS3 is getting used more for Netflix and watching movies than actual gaming. How many anti-hero FPS about killing soliders/zombies/monsters/robots can there possibly be? You can’t tell me that you are going to offer me anything exciting or different that I haven’t seen a 1000 times before in countless FPS games. I have a huge stack of games that are unfinished because I just lost interest half way through.
When I was a teenager I loved playing space combat simulators, mainly Wing Commander, X-Wing and Privateer. I spent hours on those games.
They were engaging and exciting and they kept me occupied for hours. In fact if I could get a hold of one of those 1990s joystick controllers I’ll bet you I could pick up X-Wing vs Tie Fighter today and still have a ball with it.
Which is why it’s a little confusing for me that with the stagnant state the development of new and exciting games is it that developers haven’t considered the potential gold mine that there is in ressurecting games the Space Combat genre. I know these games aren’t exactly “new” but we haven’t seen a new mainstream title released for about 10 years or so and none have been on the new generation of consoles. X-Wing was released in 1993. New studies have reported that the average game of gamers is 32 years old. I’m betting a lot of these guys grew up playing the same games I was. Seems to me there would be huge interest from old gamers and new gamers alike in bringing back a remade Tie-Fighter or Wing Commander game. Can you imagine those games with a decent story-line, updated graphics and online play and perhaps a Call-of-Duty-esque multiple period storyline? That would be money..

Try the X series. http://www.egosoft.com/games/x3/screenshots_en.php
I believe it’s on PC and XBox.

Ya I have a PS3, although that looks pretty cool.
If you want some internet spaceships, try out eve online. Lots of nerdy space combat, although it has a large learning curve.
